Japan’s Foreign Bond Selling Slows Sharply as Outflows Nearly Halve

Japan’s foreign bond selling eased significantly in the latest reporting period, with net purchases of overseas debt improving to -161.6 billion yen from a previous -339.9 billion yen. The updated data, released on 21 October 2026, indicate that while Japanese investors remained net sellers of foreign bonds, the scale of outflows has almost halved.

The moderation in selling suggests a partial stabilization in cross-border portfolio flows after a period of heavier reductions in foreign bond holdings. Although still negative, the smaller outflow figure may point to reduced pressure on overseas fixed-income positions held by Japanese institutions and investors.

Market participants will be watching upcoming data to see whether this shift marks the beginning of a more sustained normalization in Japan’s foreign bond investment trend or simply a temporary pause in a broader selling phase.
