The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) business confidence index slipped to 134.3 in September 2026 from 135.1 in August, but remained close to its highest reading since June 2011. The chamber reported that rising energy costs continued to be a major concern for businesses, driving up operating expenses and squeezing profit margins. Domestic gasoline prices rose to a new record in October, adding renewed financial strain for both households and firms. Even so, firmer precious‑metal prices, along with stronger tourism activity and increased vehicle sales, helped keep business confidence above its level of a year earlier.
