New Zealand to Launch Monthly CPI in July 2027

Statistics New Zealand will start publishing a monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) from July 2027, in response to strong demand from financial markets and the wider public for more timely inflation data. This new monthly indicator is expected to enhance inflation monitoring and give the Reserve Bank of New Zealand a clearer, more up-to-date view of price pressures, supporting more informed interest rate decisions in an environment of ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. More frequent inflation readings should help reduce uncertainty and improve the timing and precision of policy responses. Initially, the monthly CPI will operate alongside, rather than replace, the existing quarterly CPI, with both measures released in parallel.
