New Zealand Stocks Fall to Start the Week

New Zealand shares slipped 41 points, or 0.3%, to 13,931 in Monday morning trading, giving back some of the gains notched over the previous three sessions. The market was dragged lower primarily by consumer staples, healthcare, and communication services.

The benchmark index retreated from its highest level since August 5, reached on Friday, as it tracked a decline in US stock futures. Global sentiment remained fragile after last week’s sell-off driven by a jump in US Treasury yields, with investors now attempting to regroup.

Locally, traders stayed focused on a fresh batch of corporate earnings due this week. Caution also prevailed ahead of the release of US PCE inflation data, which will be closely watched for clues on the Federal Reserve’s next policy move, as well as upcoming FOMC remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium.

Sentiment was further dampened by the latest domestic figures, which showed New Zealand retail sales falling for the first time since Q3 2024. Among the notable early decliners were Contact Energy (-1.2%), Fletcher Building (-1.0%), and A2 Milk (-1.0%). Chorus eased 0.6% despite reporting a sharp increase in net profit.
