The NZX 50 fell 48 points, or 0.4%, to 13,702 in Wednesday morning trade, extending the previous session’s losses and mirroring an overnight decline on Wall Street led by weakness in major semiconductor stocks. Sentiment was cautious ahead of the release of China’s September CPI, PPI, and trade data later today, amid subdued domestic demand and higher oil prices.
Investors were also awaiting key US inflation figures for guidance on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision, alongside New Zealand’s food inflation and business PMI data due later this week. At the same time, markets continued to track developments in the Middle East—particularly the Saudi Arabia–Houthi conflict—and their potential impact on crude prices.
Sector-wise, financials, energy, technology, and consumer discretionary stocks were the main drags on the index. Notable decliners included AFT Pharmaceuticals (-2.0%), Infratil (-1.8%), Briscoe Group (-1.8%), Freightways Group (-1.5%), Summerset Group (-1.2%), Meridian Energy (-0.9%), Channel Infrastructure (-0.9%), and A2 Milk (-0.6%).
