Hungary’s Retail Sales Growth More Than Doubles in March, Signalling Stronger Consumer Demand

Hungary’s retail sector posted a sharp acceleration in growth in March 2026, with sales rising 8.2% year-over-year, according to data updated on 7 May 2026. This marks a significant jump from February 2026, when retail sales were up 3.8% compared with the same month a year earlier.

The figures, measured on a year-over-year basis, indicate that Hungarian consumers increased their spending markedly as the first quarter drew to a close. While February’s reading already showed positive momentum versus February 2025, March’s performance suggests a much stronger upswing in demand compared with March 2025.

The more-than-doubling of the annual growth rate between February and March underscores a notable improvement in retail activity, a key gauge of domestic consumption and overall economic sentiment in Hungary.
