Japan’s Industrial Output Slides Further in August, Extending Manufacturing Weakness

Japan’s industrial production weakened again in August 2026, underscoring mounting pressure on the country’s manufacturing sector. According to the latest data updated on 15 October 2026, output fell by 2.4% month-over-month, a sharper decline than the previous 1.7% drop recorded in July’s data (also measured on a month-over-month basis).

The figures show that the contraction is not an isolated setback but part of a continuing negative trend, as each month’s performance is evaluated against the one immediately before it. The deeper fall in August suggests that any stabilization in factory activity remains elusive, raising concerns that prolonged weakness in industrial production could weigh more heavily on Japan’s broader economic outlook in the coming months.
