The administration of President Donald Trump plans to allocate at least $900 million for construction projects and the modernization of the White House grounds, The Washington Post reports, citing confidential contracts and closed planning documents.
According to the report, the funding was assembled by reallocating resources from other government agencies and by drawing on contributions from private donors without submitting a direct request for appropriations to Congress.
All the accumulated funds were transferred to a special account intended for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the presidential residence, where the balance is normally only a few million dollars. The administration expects to pay for contracts for the large‑scale renovation from that account.
