UK Shop Price Inflation Inches Up to 1.2% in March, Says BRC Index

The British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) Shop Price Index showed a slight acceleration in UK shop price inflation in March 2026, with prices rising 1.2% year-on-year. This compares with a 1.1% annual increase recorded in February 2026, based on data updated as of 30 March 2026.

The index measures how retail prices in the UK change compared to the same month a year earlier. In this case, the March 2026 reading reflects how prices evolved versus March 2025, while the February 2026 figure is measured against February 2025. The marginal uptick suggests that, on a yearly basis, retail price pressures have strengthened only slightly month-on-month, indicating a still relatively subdued shop price inflation environment.

Analysts and market participants often watch the BRC Shop Price Index as an early signal of trends in consumer goods prices on the high street. While the move from 1.1% to 1.2% does not indicate a sharp shift in inflation dynamics, it may feed into expectations around broader UK inflation data and retailers’ pricing power heading into the coming months.
