The NZX 50 was little changed around 13,726 on Tuesday morning, after advancing in the previous session, as traders digested the latest labour market figures. Data showed the unemployment rate unexpectedly climbed to an 11-year high of 5.7% in Q3 2026, up from 5.6% in Q2 and contrary to market expectations for a decline to 5.5%.
Investors also tracked early voting ahead of New Zealand’s 7 November general election, with nearly 1 million ballots cast in the first week. Sector performance was mixed: gains in energy and technology helped offset weakness in communication services, financials, and real estate.
Sentiment was supported by a positive lead from Wall Street overnight, although rising oil prices tempered risk appetite. Among individual movers, Fisher & Paykel and Freightways Group each rose 0.7%, Channel Infrastructure advanced 0.6%, and Fletcher Building added 0.6%. In contrast, Henderson Far East Income fell 1.6%, while South Port NZ declined 0.7%.
