Scientists at the University of Oxford have conducted quite a whimsical research to count the number of bacteria populating European banknotes.
The Danish crown was found to host approximately 40.3 thousand bacteria, while its Swedish counterpart is home to 39.6 thousand microbes. Any other European note carries 26 thousand bacteria on average. Scientists warned that this amount of microorganisms is enough to trigger a disease.
The euro with its 11 thousand microbes was announced to be the cleanest currency of all. Meanwhile, the Russian paper ruble is a transmitting agent for nearly 30 thousand bacteria.
The research focused on paper money of 15 countries, however not all of them have been revealed. The types of bacteria detected also remain unknown. However, what can be stated for sure is that all of them can afflict the excretory system or give rise to an infection.
