Egypt wastes about €1 billion

The financial aid provided by the European Union to Egypt has vanished into thin air. One billion euros allocated to this African country has been ineffective in getting the desired results. The money, which was oriented to stabilize the economy, improve the democratic governance, and fight against the human rights violation, has not solved these problems. That was concluded by the experts of the European Commission after the funding granted to Egypt over the past seven years. The European funds turned a blind eye to the corrupted local officials and secrecy of information about the public expenditures hoping that at least the part of the bailout will be used as intended. Moreover, the authorities withheld the exact amount of money on army maintaining as well as the money spent on the president and senior officials' support. So, it is impossible to trace about 60% of the total aid that gives a great opportunity for funds misappropriation. After the change in Egypt's leadership the situation in the country started to deteriorate. The new government, which came at the helm after the popular uprising 2011, does not consider the programs designed to improve the civil society's living conditions to be a priority.
