COVID-19 boosts gaming industry revenues

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the global economy and has changed the lives of millions of people forcing them to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary contact with the outside world. Consequently, people turn to video games for entertainment. The number of new gamers is growing day by day giving a bump to the gaming industry. The total revenue from selling online games has jumped by 11% over a month. Moreover, analysts suggest that this is just the beginning. The industry is booming in all directions - console games, computer games, and mobile games. Thus, Animal Crossing: New Horizons developed and published by Nintendo with 5 million digital copies sold in a month and Doom Eternal, 3 million copies, are recognized as the best-selling games during the pandemic period. Meanwhile, the new Activision Blizzard battle royale shooter Call of Duty: Warzone is a leader among free-to-play video games. The mobile games market requires special attention as well. Only in March, revenues in this industry skyrocketed to $5.7 billion. The seemingly forgotten Pokemon Go became the most popular mobile game in March. Niantic, the developer of Pokemon Go, has made several changes in the game which allow users to play at home. As a result, the earnings increased by 18% to $111 million. Likewise, social distancing measures have boosted the adoption of cloud gaming services. This is a new direction in the gaming sector which gives people the opportunity to play computer and console games using a browser. Recently, Google, a leading company in this field, has removed entry fees for its Stadia cloud gaming service. Many users have already assessed the advantages of this platform.
