Donald Trump is accused of participation in the manipulations with the yuan. The fact is that the US president has several times blamed China for manipulating its national currency and allowing it to fall to its lowest levels. However, it looks like the US president’s rhetoric causes the yuan depreciation. As a rule, the People’s Bank of China regularly sets a reference rate for the yuan at its weakest point. However, after another speech provided by Donald Trump, the currency declined even lower. Even the Chinese central bank has never managed to do so. The main reason for the drop in the yuan was the announcement that the US was planning to impose sanctions against China, including controls on transactions and freeze assets of Chinese officials and businesses. The US sanctions were triggered by the Chinese new national security law imposed on Hong Kong. Market participants know that the yuan’s price is the most precise indicator of the relations between the two largest economies. Thus, the Chinese yuan may slide to 10-11 yuan for one US dollar amid the escalation of tension between Beijing and Washington.
