Robert Johnson: generous cash to compensate for racial inequality

The death of George Floyd during his detention in Minneapolis sparked off nationwide clashes in the US. Against the background of anti-racial protests, Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, calls on the federal government to provide trillions of dollars as reparations to African Americans for slavery. Remarkably, this idea was brought up not by a rebel teenager smashing shop windows. The novel anti-racism expert and philanthropist is a mature 74-year old celebrity. He estimated the compensation package to the black community at $14 trillion. He believes that money could somehow tackle “the systemic racial inequality” which stems from the country’s history of slavery. 'Now is the time to go big, short answers to long horrific questions about the stain of slavery are not going to solve the inequality problem,' Johnson said on CNBC. “Wealth transfer is exactly what's needed,” he underscored. Oddly enough, the passion for freebies and easy money survives in the country of truly equal opportunities. Slavery was abolished long ago. Ample earning opportunities are available to everyone which is guaranteed by the US legislation. Nevertheless, people are not interested in education free of charge, affordable healthcare and accommodation, targeted social aid, or something like free psychological advice. Robert Johnson’s speech certainly appeals to fighters against injustice, but lacks logic. Why should owners of corporations founded decades after the slavery abolition pay reparations for the crime which they did not commit? Last but not least, Johnson himself is a media tycoon, executive, and investor. However, he did not clear up whether he is going to file for compensation or to share his fortune with less wealthy African Americans.
