During the III International Arctic Forum, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin stated that the right to extract oil in the Arctic region would be given to the companies with up-to-date technologies. Besides, the major condition is the protection of the environment in the area. The balance of human activity and nature conservation policy should be ensured, Putin added. Russia’s President underlined that the basic principles of the country’s policy in the Arctic region presupposed setting special modes of natural resources management. In particular, the right to extract oil from deposits in the Arctic conditions will be given only to the companies using high-tech methods and having facilities to conduct the operations. Russia has joined the Strategic programme for protection of the environment in the Arctic Region, the ministries elaborated the inner governmental programmes of development of Russia’s sector of the Arctic region. In the framework of the programme, the work on preservation of the Arctic wildlife, particularly rare species of whales, dolphins, birds, and white bears will be conducted. The president assured that the Russian Federation is one of the biggest Arctic nations and is ready for “the closest cooperation” in the framework of Arctic Council, Global Environmental Facility, and the United Nations Environment Programme.
