Gazprom plans to issue bonds in yuan

The top managers of Russian giant Gazprom are about to market bonds in yuan. The corporation is hammering out the scheme to issue bonds in the Chinese currency. The final proposal on improvement of this procedure is to be presented at the end of the first half of 2014. There is no official information about the upcoming changes, yet a reliable source representing a banking world, confirmed that Gazprom is looking into every opportunity, as the issue may bring new investors. No comments came from the representatives of Gazprom though. Yet, there is a good reason to expect the project to go live. Most analysts have no doubts it will be implemented, but they are uncertain about the timing. And this is when it would be wise to recall the speech by Andrey Kruglov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Head of the Finance and Economics Department, at the meeting with investors in 2011. “OAO Gazprom may borrow in Chinese yuan this year. We are actively working with China and expect specific agreements this year,” Kruglov said in New York. It should be noticed that, as the official data for 2014 shows, the company's external financial borrowings will stand at 90 billion rubles ($2.5 billion). Two months ago, Gazprom placed Series 35 of 7-year loan participation notes in the amount of €750 million with a yield of 3.6%. What is more, Gazprom also went ahead with Eurobonds of Series 30, 31, 32 in the amount of €2.4 billion, Series 33 for 500 million pounds and Series 34 for 500 million Swiss francs. In total, the company managed to raise about $4.7 billion. Over the last 10 years, Gazprom has been issuing bonds denominated in dollars, yen, pounds, and Swiss franc.
