Russia to show its teeth

Every new day brings us fresh news. Recently, lots of stories have been covering, some way or another, political standoff in Ukraine and shedding light on determined position of Russia in this issue. Never-ending threats of sanctions and provocations, severe censure from the global society and discontent of Ukraine’s interim government – all this shape the current state of events. However, the Russian officials do not sit idly by. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that the country may show its teeth. He believes that this measure will be a sound alternative to the notorious sanctions imposed by the West. Being a part to the WTO, Russia may appeal to courts, including to the Dispute Settlement Body within the WTO. By saying that, the head of the government addressed the possible limitation on Russian goods under European third energy package and the EU’s attempt to liberalize regional electricity and gas market. The country is against both moves. However, Moscow will go into extremes only if needed. The government estimate shows that the nation’s annual trade turnover with the EU totals $400 billion a year and both sides tend to maintain and even expand cooperation. As a helping measure, the Russian companies which largely depend on international cooperation will receive additional support from the government to cushion the impact of sanctions on them. Besides, Dmitry Medvedev noted that it is necessary to pivot economy east and reduce dependence from outside to be more self-sufficient. Threat of sanctions may give a jolt to the domestic market bringing benefits rather than damage. The senior official said that in recent years the Russian industry has got up on its feet to become competitive sector with high tech companies, including the defense capability.
