Microsoft has confirmed it is going to sell Xbox One without Kinect, the motion sensor that was sold as a key part of the system. So, in early summer a new play station will be introduced to gamers. The Microsoft management believes this marketing move could lower a console price, thus making buyers happier and boosting sales. Earlier, Microsoft insisted that the Kinect periphery was an integral part of the package which tipped the system’s price $100 over the hot-selling PlayStation 4. Meanwhile, the main rival Sony is supplying PlayStation 4 at the price of $399 to the U.S. market. The decision to shave $100 off the price will make the Xbox much more competitive. In light of Microsoft’s original Xbox mission statement, this move as an admission of defeat. Phil Spenser, Chief of Xbox division stated that “the new version is needed to get the kudos from fans of the previous hardware generation.” There is a grain of truth in his words. Indeed, most of currently developed games do not require new generation periphery. Gamers are in the habit of using a traditional joystick and do not see an equally comfortable alternative. Here are a few sales figures. Microsoft has sold over 5 million consoles since the device was put up for sale. The reading outnumbers considerably estimates of independent auditors who recorded 4.2 million consoles. However, Sony can boast about more impressive results having sold 7 million items of PlayStation 4. These figures show an obvious advantage of Sony over Microsoft because both companies launched new consoles in November 2013. Analysts are certain that the trend will last indefinitely. So, the Japanese electronics giant will be able to keep a larger market share and engage interest of gamers around the world.
