Canadian Stocks Advance as Oil Rally Cools

The S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 0.5% to close at 36,108 on Tuesday, driven largely by strength in the banking sector. RBC gained 1%, TD Bank advanced 1.2%, and both Scotiabank and CIBC rose 0.9%. The cooling oil rally helped ease pressure on credit-sensitive names that had been weighed down by energy-driven inflation.

Infrastructure and utilities also contributed to the upside, with Enbridge up 1.1%, TC Energy higher by 1.3%, and Waste Connections advancing 1.8%. Retailers participated in the move as well, with Loblaw adding 0.5% and Alimentation Couche-Tard (ATD) rising 1.9%.

In technology, Shopify increased 1% and Constellation Software gained 2.6%, outperforming despite a selloff in U.S. chipmakers and hyperscalers. Celestica slipped 0.5%.

Energy producers were more muted as crude oil pared earlier gains, with Cenovus easing 0.5%. Mining names also retreated alongside weaker gold prices, with Agnico Eagle and Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) each down 1%.
