Mexico Retail Sales Slide Eases in June, Hinting at Gradual Stabilization

Mexico’s retail sector remained in contraction in June 2026, but the pace of decline slowed, suggesting consumer activity may be stabilizing after a weaker start to the summer. Month-over-month retail sales fell 0.2% in June, an improvement from the 0.6% drop recorded in May 2026, according to data updated on 21 August 2026.

On a comparison basis, both readings reflect a month-over-month downturn, but the smaller decline in June indicates that the pressure on household spending may be easing. The “actual” figure for June measures the change versus May, while the “previous” figure for May captures the change versus April, highlighting that the sharpest pullback occurred earlier in the period.

Although retail activity is still in negative territory, the moderation from May’s steeper fall could be interpreted by market participants as an early sign that demand is finding a floor. Investors and policymakers are likely to watch upcoming monthly releases closely to see whether June’s softer decline marks the beginning of a more sustained stabilization in Mexico’s consumer sector.
