The S&P 500 added 0.1% to close at a record high of 7,173.9 on Monday, while the Nasdaq advanced 0.2% to a new peak of 24,887. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, slipped 63 points.
Investors are gearing up for a pivotal week of earnings from megacap technology names, including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta. Geopolitical uncertainty around U.S.–Iran relations remains elevated, though reports that Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz offered some support to sentiment. Even so, oil prices continued to climb, gaining roughly 2%.
Markets are also focused on upcoming monetary policy decisions from major central banks, most notably the Federal Reserve. Sector-wise, communication services, financials, and technology outperformed, while consumer staples lagged.
In individual stock moves, Nvidia rose 4%, Alphabet gained 1.8%, and Micron Technology jumped 5.6%. Qualcomm finished 1% higher, paring earlier gains following reports it is working with OpenAI and MediaTek to develop smartphone processors. In contrast, Apple shares declined 1.3%.
