European Stocks Rise to Records

European equities advanced to fresh record highs on Monday as a sharp decline in energy prices pushed benchmark borrowing costs lower. The Euro STOXX 50 climbed 1.2% to close at 6,440, while the STOXX Europe 600 added 0.4% to finish at 652. Oil and natural gas prices fell significantly after the US refrained from launching strikes on Iran over the weekend and President Trump signaled openness to a ceasefire.

The drop in sovereign yields eased elevated funding costs, providing support to the banking and insurance sectors. Shares in UniCredit, Santander, BBVA, and BNP Paribas each rose more than 2%. Intesa Sanpaolo gained 2.4% after merger talks between Banca MPS and Banco BPM over a potential merger of equals collapsed, rekindling expectations that Intesa could move to acquire Banco BPM instead.

Software stocks also finished higher, mirroring gains in the US technology sector, with SAP advancing 4.4%. Deutsche Telekom rose 5% ahead of its upcoming earnings release.
