Romania’s new car registrations remained in negative territory in February 2026, but the pace of decline eased compared with the previous month, according to the latest year-over-year data updated on 24 March 2026. The indicator showed a 24.30% drop versus February 2025, an improvement from January’s sharper 33.50% annual decline.
The figures suggest that while demand in the Romanian auto market is still under pressure, the worst of the recent downturn may be receding. January 2026 marked a deep contraction compared with a year earlier, but February’s less severe fall hints at a gradual stabilization in registrations as the sector adjusts to weaker consumer confidence and tighter household budgets.
On a year-over-year basis, the current reading reflects ongoing challenges for car dealers, manufacturers and related financing services. However, the moderation in the rate of decline between January and February could be an early sign that the market is slowly regaining its footing after a pronounced slump at the start of 2026.
