Microsoft To Invest $3.3 Bln To Accelerate Wisconsin's AI Infrastructure, Economic Growth

Microsoft has decided to invest $3.3 billion in Wisconsin, aiming to establish the U.S. state as a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and economic growth.

Brad Smith, the Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, stated that the company plans to use AI to advance the next wave of manufacturing companies, skills, and jobs in Wisconsin and nationwide. He emphasized the potential of large corporations to set an economic foundation for medium, small, startup companies, and non-profit organizations.

The investment will primarily focus on the development of cloud computing and AI infrastructure. It will enhance the creation of the first manufacturing-focused AI co-innovation lab in the country, and establish an AI skilling initiative to provide local residents with necessary training.

Wisconsin's Governor Tony Evers appreciated Microsoft's blue-chip stature and recognized the investment's significance. He noted that Microsoft's decision to invest in Wisconsin was a reflection of the state's strength in terms of its workforce, infrastructure, economy, and quality of life.

The tech company has plans to launch the initiative in four parts, thereby ensuring long-lasting economic benefits and job opportunities for the community.

In the primary phase, Microsoft intends to develop a data center campus in Mount Pleasant, and a Data Center Academy in association with Gateway Technical College. Following this, Microsoft is set to establish a manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which would bridge the state's businesses and Microsoft.

In the subsequent phase, Microsoft, based out of Redmond, will concentrate on educating residents about generative AI by 2030. They plan to do this with support from The United Way Wisconsin, United Way Racine, and other community partners. In addition, the company will collaborate with Gateway Technical College to train local AI software developers.

In the final phase, Microsoft, in partnership with the Racine Unified School District, will support initiatives like Girls in STEM and the Summer Youth Employment Program. The company will also provide Equity Through Technology and STEAM Grant Funds to aid the community.

Furthermore, Microsoft has joined forces with National Grid to construct a new 250 megawatt solar project in Wisconsin, scheduled to start operations in 2027.
