US Treasury issues $100 bills bearing President Trump’s signature

The US Department of the Treasury has begun issuing updated 100‑dollar bills that for the first time in the country’s history bear the signature of the sitting president, Donald Trump. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent showed the first printed sheet with the new notes on Fox News. The secretary said the president used a special mini marker for the autograph and expressed confidence that citizens around the world will show increased interest in holding cash bearing the American leader’s signature, a development he said would have a positive effect on the federal budget.

Traditionally, US paper currency carries the signatures of the Treasury secretary and the Treasurer of the United States. The special release of $100 notes was timed to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence and involved a historic design change—the president’s autograph replaced the treasurer’s signature. The Treasury also outlined plans to mint a commemorative silver coin with the president’s portrait and to prepare prototypes of a new $250 banknote, the issuance of which would require congressional approval.

President Trump earlier described the appearance of his autograph on the $100 bill as a great honor. He told the public that he welcomes such distinctions, while insisting he never sought them, contrary to critics’ claims. The appearance of a sitting president’s signature on banknotes is a unique precedent in the past 165 years of US currency history.
