UK Consumer Confidence Remains Unchanged Near 3-Year High: GfK

British consumer confidence held steady near a three-year high in August, buoyed by improving personal finance conditions, according to survey results from the market research group GfK, released on Friday.

The consumer confidence index remained at -13 in August, maintaining its peak level since September 2021. Analysts had forecast a slight improvement to -12.

The survey highlighted a significant contrast between consumers' views on personal finances and the general economic landscape. Expectations for personal finances rose three points to +6, and the index tracking past personal financial situations inched up one point to -7.

Joe Staton, GfK's client strategy director, attributed the more positive outlook to a mortgage-friendly interest rate cut at the start of August and anticipations of further reductions.

Conversely, consumers' perceptions of both past and future general economic conditions worsened in August. The indicator for the general economic situation over the past twelve months fell three points to -35, while expectations for the future economic situation dropped four points to -15.

In contrast, the major purchase index climbed three points to -13, reaching its highest level since January.
