South Africa Forex Reserves Hit New All-Time High

In May 2025, South Africa's gross foreign exchange reserves surged to a new all-time high of $68.116 billion, compared to $67.585 billion in April. This growth was fueled by an uptick in gold reserves, which rose to $13.277 billion from $13.192 billion the previous month, an increase in SDR holdings, which inched up to $6.439 billion from $6.436 billion, and a rise in foreign currency reserves, climbing to $48.4 billion from $47.957 billion. Contrarily, the forward position, indicative of the central bank's unresolved or swap transactions, declined to $0.528 billion in May, down from $0.791 billion in April.
