New Zealand Dollar Hovers Near 6-Week Low

The New Zealand dollar inched up to $0.589 but remained near a six-week low, as escalating conflict in the Middle East kept investors on edge. Ongoing hostilities in the region have led to rising casualties, extensive damage, and a sharp increase in energy prices. The kiwi has come under particular pressure given New Zealand’s heavy dependence on imported oil, leaving the currency vulnerable to higher fuel costs.

On the monetary policy front, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand left its cash rate unchanged last month and stressed the need to maintain an accommodative stance. Governor Anna Breman noted that the economy still has room to recover this year without stoking excessive inflation, suggesting limited urgency for a near-term rate hike. Market pricing now reflects only a modest chance of an initial increase in interest rates by December.
