New Zealand Export Prices Rebound Sharply in Q4, Lifting Terms of Trade

New Zealand’s export prices posted a strong recovery in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the terms of trade for exports rising 5.3%, according to data updated on 3 March 2026. This marks a sharp turnaround from the third quarter of 2025, when the indicator had declined by 1.6%.

The shift from a negative reading to robust growth suggests an improvement in the relative value of New Zealand’s exports on global markets. A higher terms-of-trade export price index typically indicates that the country is receiving better prices for its goods and services abroad, which can support export revenues and, indirectly, national income.

While the data release does not specify the drivers of the rebound, the move into positive territory in the final quarter of 2025 highlights a more favourable pricing environment for New Zealand exporters compared with earlier in the year.
