Brazil General Price Index Surges Most in 5 Years

Brazil’s General Market Price Index climbed 2.73% in April 2026 from the previous month, exceeding market expectations of a 2.5% increase and marking the steepest monthly rise since 2021. Raw material prices jumped 5.78% as ongoing blockades of energy tankers, dry bulk carriers, and commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf drove up benchmark commodity prices for key inputs. As a result, average gasoline prices for consumers rose 6.3% during the period. The impact was more pronounced for businesses, with producer prices increasing 3.49%, while the consumer price index advanced 0.94%.
