Euro Area Inflation Edges Up to 2.9% in July, Halting Recent Disinflation Trend

Euro zone consumer price inflation ticked higher in July 2026, with the year-over-year Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising to 2.9%, up from 2.8% in June 2026. The latest data, updated on 31 July 2026, suggest a modest re-acceleration in price pressures after a period of gradual easing earlier in the year.

Both the current and previous readings are calculated on a year-over-year basis, comparing each month’s price levels with the same month a year earlier. In June, prices were 2.8% higher than in June of the previous year, while in July they were 2.9% above their level a year earlier. Although the change is marginal, the uptick may attract attention from policymakers and market participants watching for signs that inflation could be stabilizing above target rather than continuing to slow.

Investors and analysts will now be looking to upcoming data releases to determine whether July’s increase marks the start of a new trend or a temporary fluctuation within a broader disinflationary path. For the European Central Bank, the shift from 2.8% to 2.9% underscores the challenge of steering inflation sustainably back toward its medium-term goal without disrupting the region’s economic recovery.
