Futures tracking the S&P/TSX Composite Index were little changed on Monday, after the benchmark notched a record high in the previous session, as investors weighed uncertainty around US–Iran negotiations and a new round of corporate earnings. Barrick shares traded lower in US pre-market action after the company reported second-quarter earnings and revenue that missed expectations. Franco-Nevada and Constellation Software are slated to release their results on Tuesday.
Markets were also digesting last week’s stronger-than-expected Canadian employment data, which showed a gain of 75,100 jobs in July and a third consecutive monthly decline in the jobless rate, down to 6.4%. The continued strength in the labor market could encourage a more hawkish policy stance from the Bank of Canada.
Elsewhere in commodities, oil prices advanced amid lingering uncertainty over efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while gold prices edged lower.
