Consumer price inflation in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, accelerated to 8.0% in August 2026, up from 7.3% in July and above market expectations of 7.7%. This was the highest rate recorded since June 2023. The increase was driven primarily by food prices, with food inflation surging to 8.5% in August from 6.3% in July, marking its highest level in more than three years. In contrast, non-food inflation eased slightly, edging down to 7.7% from 7.8%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.3% in August, compared with a 0.2% increase in the previous month.
