Sensex Opens the Week Lower

India’s BSE Sensex slipped about 0.1% to 72,391 on Monday, erasing gains from the previous session as sustained foreign investor outflows continued to dampen sentiment. This weakness outweighed support from softer crude oil prices and fresh measures by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to stabilise the rupee.

Brent crude declined 1.6% to around $103 per barrel amid expectations of a potential Russia–Ukraine energy ceasefire. To ease pressure on the rupee and curb volatility, the RBI redirected oil companies’ dollar purchases away from the spot market and tightened foreign-exchange hedging rules.

In stock-specific moves, Avenue Supermarts, operator of the DMart retail chain, fell about 3.3% even after reporting a 7.6% year-on-year rise in standalone net profit to ₹804 crore. By contrast, Mahindra & Mahindra advanced roughly 1.1% despite a 19.2% year-on-year drop in September-quarter production. Poonawalla Fincorp jumped 4.9% after posting a fivefold surge in consolidated net profit to ₹375 crore.
