In May 2025, consumer prices in Brunei experienced a year-on-year decrease of 0.5%, intensifying from a 0.1% decline observed in April, marking the third consecutive month of deflation. The most significant reduction was noted in the food and non-alcoholic beverages sector, which fell by 0.8% compared to a 0.4% decrease previously, representing the largest drop in four months. Furthermore, declines were seen across various sectors including housing and utilities which decreased by 0.2%, furnishings and household maintenance by 0.7% from 0.2%, transport by 0.8% following a 1.1% drop, communication which was down by 0.3% from 0.5%, recreation and culture at 1.6%, and miscellaneous goods and services at 0.2%. Of particular note, clothing and footwear prices decreased by 1.0%, reversing the significant 8.4% increase experienced in April. On the other hand, education inflation remained constant at 0.3%, while slight increases were observed in the costs associated with restaurants and hotels, which rose by 0.3% from a previous 0.4%, and health by 1.6% from 1.5%. Month over month, consumer prices experienced a slight dip of 0.1% following a 0.3% rise in April.
