India Set for Heavy September Rains After Wetter August

India is anticipated to experience above-average monsoon rainfall throughout September, following a 5% increase over normal rainfall levels in August, according to the state-run meteorological agency. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected precipitation to reach 109% of the 50-year average across most regions, with the exception of the northeastern areas and the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. While plentiful rain benefits India's $4 trillion economy by replenishing aquifers and reservoirs, excessive rainfall poses a risk to key summer-sown crops such as rice, cotton, soybean, corn, and pulses, which are slated for harvest starting mid-September. Almost half of India's agricultural land relies solely on the June-to-September monsoon season for crop cultivation.
