UK 10-Year Yield Inches Lower after BoE

On Thursday, the yield on the UK 10-year gilt experienced fluctuations, eventually settling at 4.62% after the Bank of England decided to maintain its Bank Rate at 4%, in line with market expectations, while also reducing the pace of its quantitative tightening. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 7-2 in favor of keeping the rates steady, and signaled a continuing but gradual approach to rate adjustments in their easing cycle. Meanwhile, the central bank adjusted its quantitative tightening operations, scaling back to an annualized reduction of £70 billion for bonds across various maturities, down from the previous £100 billion target since 2022. This deceleration was in response to recent pressures on longer-dated gilt maturities, where fiscal uncertainties and a high policy rate pushed yields on the 10-year and 30-year securities above those of other G7 nations. Moreover, the UK's Debt Management Office's anticipated higher gilt issuance has pressured interest rate swaps to fall below the yields of similar maturities, further highlighting the fiscal challenges facing the government.
