Japanese Private Consumption Edges Higher in Q1 2026, Breaking Stagnation

Japan’s GDP private consumption returned to growth in the first quarter of 2026, rising 0.3% quarter-over-quarter after flatlining at 0.0% in the previous quarter. The latest figures, updated as of 18 May 2026, mark a modest but notable improvement in household spending momentum compared with the fourth quarter of 2025.

The previous reading for private consumption in Q4 2025 showed no change from the prior quarter, underscoring a period of stagnation in consumer activity. The Q1 2026 uptick suggests that domestic demand has begun to recover, with current data reflecting a positive shift in quarter-over-quarter dynamics relative to the end of last year.

On a quarter-over-quarter comparison basis, the “actual” figure represents the change in private consumption in Q1 2026 against Q4 2025, while the “previous” figure captures the Q4 2025 change versus the third quarter of 2025. The move from 0.0% to 0.3% points to a gradual strengthening in consumer spending as a contributor to Japan’s overall economic performance at the start of 2026.
