German Producer Inflation Hits Over 3-Year High

Germany’s producer prices rose by 4.6% year-on-year in August 2026, the fifth consecutive month of gains. The increase accelerated from July’s 3.0% and exceeded market expectations of 4.1%, marking the fastest annual rise in producer prices since April 2023.

The upturn was driven primarily by higher energy costs, which advanced 8.3% compared with 3.8% in July, reflecting stronger prices for mineral oil, naphtha, heating oil, and motor fuels. Prices for intermediate goods also picked up, rising 6.1% after a 5.4% increase in July, largely due to higher prices for metals, precious metals, copper, and semi-finished copper.

Capital goods prices climbed 2.4%, supported by increased prices for machinery and motor vehicles, while prices for durable consumer goods advanced 2.1%. In contrast, non-durable consumer goods prices declined by 2.0%. Excluding energy, producer prices were up 3.1% year-on-year.

On a monthly basis, producer prices increased 1.1%, matching July’s pace. This remained the fastest monthly rise in three months and was stronger than market forecasts of a 0.4% increase.
