Australia’s Building Approvals Slump Eases in April, Signaling Possible Stabilisation

Australia’s construction sector showed signs of easing pressure in April, as the rate of decline in building approvals moderated compared with the previous month. According to data updated on 10 June 2026, building approvals fell by 3.4% month-over-month in April 2026, a marked improvement on the sharp 10.5% month-on-month drop recorded in the prior period.

The figures, measured on a month-over-month basis, indicate that while approvals are still contracting, the pace of the downturn has slowed. The latest “actual” reading of -3.4% reflects the change in April compared with March, whereas the “previous” figure of -10.5% captured the decline in the prior month versus the month before it.

Although approvals remain in negative territory, the reduced rate of decline may be interpreted by market participants as an early sign that conditions in Australia’s building and construction pipeline could be starting to stabilise after a period of more pronounced weakness.
