Greece Inflation Eases Slightly in May

Greece’s annual inflation rate eased to 5.2% in May 2026, down from 5.4% in April. The deceleration was driven primarily by slower price increases in housing and utilities (11.6% vs 13.8% in April), as well as in food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.5% vs 4.4%). Additional softening was recorded in alcoholic beverages and tobacco (-0.1% vs 1.4%), clothing and footwear (-0.9% vs 2.0%), furnishings and household equipment (-0.1% vs 0.1%), and information and communication (-2.7% vs -2.2%).

By contrast, inflation quickened in several categories, including transport (11.5% vs 10.0%), restaurants and accommodation (8.5% vs 6.1%), and recreation and culture (1.4% vs 1.0%). Inflation remained unchanged for education (2.8%) and health (1.2%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat, following a 1.5% increase in April. Meanwhile, the EU-harmonised annual inflation rate climbed to 4.9%—its highest level since March 2023—up from 4.6% in the previous month.
