Japan Eco Watchers Index Rises Less Than Expected

Public sentiment regarding the state of the Japanese economy improved for the second consecutive month in July, though the increase was modest and fell short of expectations, according to survey data released by the Cabinet Office on Thursday.

The current conditions index from the Economy Watchers' Survey, which gauges the present economic situation, inched up to 47.5 in July from 47.0 in June. Analysts had anticipated a higher reading of 47.8.

It is important to note that any value below 50 is indicative of pessimism.

The rise in the overall index was largely driven by an uptick in corporate activities, while household activities experienced a marginal increase.

Looking ahead, the outlook index, which forecasts future economic activity, improved to 48.3 from 47.9 in June.
