India Restricts Silver Jewellery Imports Till March 2026

The Government of India announced on Wednesday that import regulations on unstudded silver jewelry—formerly unrestricted—will be enforced until March 31, 2026, as reported by local media. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification detailing this change, which is aimed at restraining the abuse of free trade agreements (FTAs) and addressing the high volume of silver imports masquerading as finished jewelry. This decision comes after the Commerce Ministry noted a dramatic increase, nearly tenfold, in silver jewelry imports from Thailand. During recent months, import volumes soared from 4 metric tonnes to 40 metric tonnes, with Thailand holding 98% of this market share, up from 78%. Moving forward, imports of goods within this restricted category will necessitate a government-issued license.
