U.S. Says China Holds Key to Avoiding 100% Tariffs

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced on Tuesday that the decision regarding the imposition of the proposed 100% tariffs on Chinese exports, slated for November 1 or potentially earlier, ultimately rests with China. Speaking to CNBC, Greer highlighted the challenges Beijing might face in circumventing these tariffs. He confirmed that U.S. and Chinese officials had conducted preliminary discussions in Washington on Monday, leaving the door open for a potential resolution to the ongoing dispute concerning restrictions on critical minerals. "We believe there is a path to resolution, but we cannot endorse a scenario where China maintains a regime that grants them veto power over global high-tech supply chains," he remarked, suggesting that China's actions have exceeded acceptable boundaries. The talks on Monday did not lead to a definitive outcome, as Chinese officials provided conflicting justifications for their export restrictions. Furthermore, Greer mentioned that although a meeting between President Trump and President Xi is on the agenda, it has yet to be confirmed.
