Botswana Inflation Accelerates to 13-Month High

In September 2025, Botswana experienced an uptick in its annual inflation rate, which rose to 3.7% from 1.4% in August, reaching its highest point since August 2024. This surge was predominantly fueled by a significant rebound in transport costs, which climbed by 5.7% compared to a decrease of 1.6% in the previous month. Additionally, there were notable price increases in several categories, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, which rose to 5.4% from 5.0%, and miscellaneous goods and services, which increased to 8.5% from 7.9%. Other sectors also saw hikes: clothing and footwear grew to 3.5% from 3.2%, furnishings and household equipment went up to 4.1% from 3.6%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased to 8.1% from 6.5%, restaurants and hotels rose to 2.9% from 2.7%, and the health sector increased to 2.3% from 2.0%. Conversely, housing and utilities costs continued their downward trend, albeit at a slower rate, decreasing by 3.0%, which is less of a decline compared to the previous month's drop of 3.7%. On a monthly scale, consumer prices surged by 1.6% in September, marking the most substantial increase in two years, following a 0.5% rise in August.
