The S&P/TSX Composite climbed 1.5% to close at a record high of 33,390, as renewed interest in technology and precious metals more than offset pockets of earnings-related weakness. Information technology led the advance, with Shopify jumping 7.6% and Constellation Software gaining 5.3%, mirroring strength in US chipmakers and AI-linked names following upbeat corporate outlooks. A surge in gold above 5,000 dollars per ounce underpinned the mining sector, boosting Agnico Eagle by 4.1%, Barrick Gold by 4%, and Wheaton Precious Metals by 2.3%, as firmer bullion prices improved cash flow expectations across the industry. Energy stocks also moved higher alongside crude’s approach toward its monthly highs, with Canadian Natural Resources, Suncor Energy, Imperial Oil, and Cenovus Energy posting robust gains of between 1.7% and 3.4%. Financials were broadly constructive, with Royal Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal edging up, though company-specific earnings pressure hit Industrial Alliance, which slumped 11% after reporting softer results.
