Hungary Trade Surplus Decreases in March

Hungary’s trade surplus narrowed to EUR 924 million in March 2026, down from EUR 1,697 million in the same month a year earlier, but still exceeded market expectations of EUR 665 million, as export growth lagged behind that of imports. Exports rose 3.6% year-on-year to EUR 14,045 million, supported by higher shipments of food, beverages, and tobacco, which were partly offset by weaker exports of machinery and transport equipment, as well as manufactured goods. Imports, meanwhile, increased 11% to EUR 13,121 million, driven by stronger purchases of machinery and transport equipment and manufactured goods. Over the first three months of the year, the trade surplus declined to EUR 2,209 million from EUR 3,472 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.
