Romania’s industrial production contracted more sharply in May 2026, underscoring mounting weakness in the country’s manufacturing and industrial base. Year-over-year output fell by 5.3% in May, compared with a 3.1% decline recorded in April 2026, according to data updated on 17 July 2026.
The figures show a clear deterioration in momentum, as the annual rate of decline in industrial production accelerated by more than two percentage points in just one month. Both the current and previous readings are calculated on a year-over-year basis, comparing each month’s performance with the same month a year earlier.
The deeper contraction in May points to growing pressure on Romania’s industrial sector and raises concerns about its potential drag on overall economic performance if the trend persists in the coming months.
