FX.co ★ China warns US about retaliatory measures over bill on tariffs for Russian energy imports

Liu Chang, a spokesperson for China’s Embassy in Washington, said Beijing will take all necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its companies and citizens if the US adopts a new bill imposing anti‑Russian sanctions. The diplomat stressed that China firmly opposes unilateral restrictions that have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the UN Security Council.

The initiative was passed by the US Senate by an overwhelming majority. The bill, drafted with the involvement of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, provides for the imposition of 100% tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian energy resources, as well as 500% tariffs on all imports from Russia into the United States.

The document has been submitted to the House of Representatives, but lawmakers will begin consideration only in September, after the summer recess, which runs until August 31. If approved by the lower chamber, the bill will be sent to US President Donald Trump for signature.
